Abstract

In the machining process, it is important to determine the appropriate process variable settings to achieve the optimum response. SKD 11 steel is one type of tool steel, which is usually used as a cutting tool, punch and dies in the machining process. Therefore, machine components manufactured with SKD 11 steel are expected to have good surface roughness. Surface roughness is a characteristic of machining performance in the drilling process which is generally used as a response. This research will optimize the surface roughness using a combination of process variables spindle rotation, feed rate and lubricants. The method used is the Taguchi method. Based on the optimization results that have been validated in the confirmation experiment, the combination of process variables in the SKD 11 drilling process that can produce the best response values is spindle rotation of 1600 rpm, feed rate of 0.140 mm/minute, and lubricant type is dromus with an average surface roughness of 0.829 µm.
