Abstract

The vertical polypropylene (PP) plastic cup ring cutting machine prototype was successfully designed, fabricated, and assembled. Functional testing confirmed that key components (including the 1.5 HP AC motor, pulley and V-belt transmission, shaft, bearings, and cutting blade) operated effectively to separate plastic cup rings from cup bodies. Performance evaluation using 416 plastic cups (1,040 g total mass) achieved an 80.05% cutting success rate. Processing required 83 cutting cycles over 1,245 seconds (20 minutes, 45 seconds), which was approximately 5 minutes slower than manual cutting (15 minutes for equivalent material). While the study successfully achieved its first objective of designing and fabricating the prototype, it fell short of the initial target capacity to process 1 kg of cups in 10 minutes. This gap was primarily driven by the cutting shaft speed of ~1,425 rpm, which proved mismatched with the blade characteristics and PP material properties; a reduced speed of 600–900 rpm is recommended for optimal performance. Nevertheless, the second objective was fully met by establishing the prototype's actual capacity and demonstrating effective separation of cup rings from their bodies.
