Abstract

People still peel the coconut fibre by hand using a machete and crowbar hammer, which requires a significant amount of effort, time, and sharp tools. This is why labour accidents are common. However, some people do use machines, but these machines are very expensive to buy. Therefore, a more energy- and cost-efficient coconut husk peeler was created. This tool is made from cheaper materials so that it is accessible to everyone can use it, especially those who run a company from home selling coconut milk. We used the VDI 2222 approach to make this tool. There are four steps: getting ideas, planning, designing, making components, assembling tools, testing tools and finishing. The results of testing this coconut peeler tool show that it is less energy, safer, and easier to lift the coconut fibre. One coconut can be peeled using this tool in about one minute. There are several aspects that are considered from this coconut peeler such as tool effectiveness, ergonomics, maintenance, affordability, development potential to increase the ease of use of this coconut peeler in the long term.
